The best Georgian white wines
Georgian white wines are known for their unique taste, tradition of production and natural fermentation methods. Here is an overview of the best Georgian white wines you should try:
Rkatsiteli – a classic of Georgian white wines
A dry or semi-dry white wine with citrus and floral notes. Fresh, fruity, with subtle notes of apples, pears and honey. The best region for this variety is Kakheti, Georgia’s most famous wine region, and it is best enjoyed with fish, poultry or light salads.
Mtsvane – delicate and aromatic
Mtsvane is one of Georgia’s oldest varieties, known for its distinctive floral aroma. Its flavour profile is dominated by notes of tropical fruits, apricots and honey with a subtle minerality. It is best grown in the Kakheti region, where it is of exceptional quality. This wine is ideal with seafood, goat’s cheese and exotic foods, with which its aromatic character perfectly matches.
Tsinandali – elegant and sophisticated
Tsinandali is a traditional cuvée made from the Rkatsiteli and Mtsvane varieties, which is characterised by its delicate and harmonious taste. Its flavour profile shows notes of citrus, almond and a light oakiness that adds elegance to the wine. The best growing conditions are in the Tsinandali region of Kakheti, where wines of exceptional quality are produced. Its balance makes it a perfect match for grilled vegetables, creamy sauces and fish dishes.
Kisi – rare and full of flavour
Kisi is an old and rare Georgian variety, characterised by its intense aroma and rich texture. Its flavour profile is full of notes of dried apricots, nuts and honey with a subtle spiciness that gives the wine a unique character. The best growing conditions are in the Kakheti region, where the quality is excellent. This wine is perfectly suited to cured meats, aged cheeses and spicy dishes, with which its complex flavours blend perfectly.
Georgia’s unique climate is ideal for growing grapes
Georgia is the cradle of viticulture with a history dating back more than 8,000 years, making it one of the oldest wine growing regions in the world. Thanks to its rich tradition and unique production methods, it produces wines of exceptional quality that can boldly compete with the best wines from the traditional wine-growing regions of Europe. Georgia’s mild and warm climate, influenced by the humid air from the Black Sea, creates ideal conditions for growing grapes. The soil in the vineyards is so fertile that the vines often grow between the trunks of the fruit trees, along which the sprouts climb upwards and the grapes hang down freely when ripe. This traditional method of cultivation is called maglari and gives the wines their unique character.
The most important Georgian white wine varieties include Rkatsiteli, which is one of the oldest and most widespread varieties, Mtsvane Kakhuri, known for its freshness and floral aroma, and the rare Kisi variety, which is characterised by its rich texture and subtle spiciness. Alongside these, Georgia offers many other unique varieties worth exploring.

UNESCO-listed Georgian wines
Georgian white wines produced using the traditional kvevri method, which are part of the UNESCO wine heritage, include:
- Mtsvane Kvevri: an aromatic white wine with notes of citrus and flowers.
- Kisi Kvevri: a rare white variety with a complex flavour and subtle spiciness.
Rkatsiteli Kvevri, on the other hand, is made from a white variety, but the long maceration on the skins gives it an amber colour, making it one of the ‘orange wines’. These wines have a deeper structure and more complex flavour than classic white wines.
