Sarajishvili 5* – 6-bottle case of Georgian brandy with 140 years of tradition

Sarajishvili is a name almost every lover of Georgian cognac knows. The brand was founded in 1884 by David Sarajishvili, who became the very first producer in the entire Russian Empire to distil brandy using classic French technology. Just a few years later, in 1887, Tbilisi began producing the first Georgian brandy following the French model – making Georgia, after France, only the second country in the Russian Empire allowed to legally use the designation “cognac.” That legacy can still be tasted in every sip today.

The five-star version ages for around five years in oak barrels and is distilled from four native Georgian grape varieties – two white ones, Tsitska and Tsolikouri, red Saperavi, and white Mtsvane. It’s precisely this diversity of Georgia’s winemaking heritage that gives Sarajishvili 5* a complexity you won’t find in other brandies.

  • 140 years of tradition – the brand was founded in 1884 by David Sarajishvili, a pioneer of French technology in the Russian Empire.
  • Distilled from 4 Georgian grape varieties – Tsitska, Tsolikouri, Saperavi and Mtsvane.
  • 5 years of ageing in oak barrels for a complex flavour.

Georgian brandy, Georgian cognac, or just brandy?

Across the countries of the former Soviet Union, Georgian brandy is still commonly called “Georgian cognac” – a deeply rooted habit dating back to when the term “cognac” was used loosely well beyond the French region that, under strict modern rules, is the only place true cognac may legally come from. Whatever term you use, one thing is certain: Georgian brandy holds its own in quality against cognac or armagnac, and even French winemakers themselves have great respect for their Caucasian competition.

Tasting profile

  • Colour: amber-gold, clear and bright.
  • Nose: opens with ripe fruit and raisins that gradually deepen into dried fruit and plum; delicate floral undertones are joined by a light touch of oak and a pronounced note of roasted almonds.
  • Palate: a light initial sweetness on the palate quickly gives way to a drier, more structured character – more complex than most brandies in the same price category, with a long oak finish.

How to serve Sarajishvili 5*

The best flavour and aroma come through at room temperature, 18–22°C, which allows all the aromatic components to fully unfold. A classic cognac glass – tulip or Napoleon-style – is the ideal choice. The traditional Georgian way is to drink it neat, which best brings out the notes of dried fruit and almonds; on hot summer days, a single ice cube can pleasantly open it up.

  • It also works beautifully in classic cocktails such as the Brandy Sidecar or Brandy Alexander.
  • Topped with tonic, it turns into a refreshing summer drink.
