Nena Grape Compote – a Georgian fruit drink

Unlike the Central European idea of compote as preserved fruit in a jar, Georgian “kompot” is a traditional sweet fruit drink: fruit is briefly cooked with water and sugar, producing a refreshing juice full of natural fruit flavour, without artificial colours or flavourings. This method of preparation has a long tradition in the Caucasus, and compote is commonly served as an alternative to lemonade or cola-based drinks. The grape version is essentially a gentle take on grape juice as Georgians have known it for centuries – the grapevine is, after all, one of the country’s oldest cultivated plants.

The Nena brand

These compotes are made by the Georgian brand Nena, founded in 2014 as part of the KTW (Kakhetian Traditional Winemaking) group – the same group behind traditional Georgian winemaking. The company built two modern factories in the mountains of Guria and Adjara in western Georgia, where fruit from local farmers has been processed since September 2015. Nena focuses on 100% natural ingredients without antibiotics, pesticides or GMOs.
