Danieli Winery Saperavi semi-sweet – 3-bottle tasting set

Saperavi literally means “dye” or “colouring” in Georgian — one look in the glass tells you why: this rare teinturier variety has red flesh as well as red skin, giving it an exceptionally deep colour and a high antioxidant content. This wine comes from the organic vineyards of Danieli, run since 2013 by a Danish winemaker and his Georgian wife Eka, who set out to give Georgian winemaking back its honest face. In its semi-sweet style the grape shows its most approachable, most charismatic side — the sweetness is natural, never cloying, always balanced by lively fruit.

• Organic vineyards on the southern slopes of north-eastern Kakheti, above the Alazani river.
• No added sugar: sweetness comes purely from stopped fermentation, with no added sugar or must.
• Iconic grape: Saperavi accounts for nearly half of the region’s total wine production.
