Danieli Winery – Saperavi Semi-Sweet Red Wine
Saperavi is one of the few teinturier grape varieties in the world—meaning the grape has both red flesh and red skin. The name literally translates to “color” or “dye” in Georgian, and a single glance into your glass is enough to understand why. Saperavi excels in every key wine characteristic: it boasts a deep color, intense flavor, crisp acidity, firm tannins, and remarkable aging potential.
In this semi-sweet style, the variety reveals its most approachable and inviting character. The sweetness is entirely natural and never overpowering, always remaining beautifully balanced with a vibrant, lively fruitiness.
Tasting Notes
-
Color: Dark ruby to almost inky—deep, rich, and highly saturated.
-
Aroma: A rich, layered bouquet of cherry, plum, blackberry, and blackcurrant, accented by subtle hints of smoke and spice. It invites you in long before your first sip.
-
Taste: A fascinating balance of tannins, acidity, and natural sugar. The palate offers a complex profile of forest berries and dried fruits (plums, raisins), beautifully complemented by luscious notes of chocolate and licorice. The natural sweetness is achieved by naturally halting the fermentation process, retaining the residual grape sugar straight from the vineyard—with absolutely no added sugar or must.
-
Finish: Elegant, long, and lingering, well-supported by a solid tannic structure.
Danieli Winery
Danieli is a small, family-owned winery founded in 2013 with a clear mission: to rediscover and revive global interest in traditional Georgian wines. Located in the mountainous northeastern part of the Kakheti region, overlooking the famous Alazani River, the vineyards are cultivated using strict ecological methods. Here, the Saperavi vines thrive on southern slopes, where warm, sunny days combined with cooler night temperatures allow the grapes to develop incredible depth of flavor while retaining their signature crisp acidity.
Food Pairings
Semi-sweet Saperavi is a wine that constantly surprises with its versatility. Its natural sweetness opens the door to pairing combinations you might never consider with a traditional dry red wine. It pairs wonderfully with:
-
Grilled Meats: Lamb, pork ribs with BBQ sauce, or traditional Caucasian shashlik.
-
Aged Cheeses: Salty sulguni, hard sheep’s milk cheeses, and rich blue cheeses.
-
Georgian Cuisine: Perfect with authentic dishes like mtsvadi (meat skewers), lobiani (bean-filled bread), or badrijani nigvzit (eggplant rolls with walnut paste).
-
Desserts: Chocolate fondant, plum cake, and dark fruit tarts.
-
On its Own: Excellent as a cozy evening drink or as a perfect gift for anyone who appreciates fine Georgian wines.
Why Choose Saperavi?
Saperavi accounts for approximately 40% of all wine production in Kakheti, producing some of the most complex and age-worthy examples of this noble grape. Saperavi is to Georgia what Malbec is to Argentina—an iconic, easily pronounceable variety that serves as a gateway to worldwide recognition. In this naturally semi-sweet expression by Danieli Winery, the Saperavi grape truly shows its most charismatic and welcoming face.
