Danieli Winery Saperavi semi-sweet – 6-bottle case of organic red wine
Danieli is a small family winery founded in 2013 to rediscover and revive interest in traditional Georgian wines. It sits in the mountainous north-east of Kakheti above the Alazani river, where the vineyards are farmed exclusively by organic methods. Saperavi grows here on south-facing slopes, where warm sunny days paired with cooler nights let the grape build depth while keeping its characteristic acidity. The name Saperavi literally means “dye” or “colouring” in Georgian — this rare teinturier variety has red flesh as well as red skin and makes up around 40% of all wine production in Kakheti. It is to Georgia what Malbec is to Argentina.
- Organic farming with no chemical intervention.
- Natural sweetness: fermentation stops naturally, retaining residual sugar from the vineyard, with no added sugar or must.
- Teinturier grape: Saperavi has red flesh as well as red skin, hence its deep colour and high antioxidant content.
Tasting profile
- Colour: deep ruby to almost ink-black.
- Nose: cherry, plum, blackberry, blackcurrant, smoke, spice — a rich, layered bouquet.
- Palate: full, velvety, balanced tannins, a complex aroma of forest fruit and dried fruit (plum, raisin), rounded off with notes of chocolate and liquorice.
- Finish: elegant and long, carried by a fine tannic structure.
Serving recommendations
- Pairs beautifully with grilled meat — lamb, BBQ pork ribs or shashlik.
- Also complements Georgian dishes such as mtsvadi, lobiani or badrijani nigvzit, along with mature cheeses like suluguni or blue cheese.
- Works well with desserts too — chocolate fondant, plum cake or fruit tartlets — or simply as an evening aperitif. For comparison, try the dry style — more Georgian wines.
